Delivery & Site Preparation

Shipping Container Delivery Site Preparation Checklist

A practical site checklist covering access, clearance, ground, placement direction and delivery-day communication.

A steel container can be the correct size, condition and price and still become the wrong purchase if the truck cannot place it. Delivery planning starts before the order. The supplier needs an honest description of the access path, surface, overhead clearance and desired door direction.

Planning a container delivery?

Include the delivery ZIP and site constraints when comparing options so the truck and placement plan fit the property.

Pre-delivery site checklist

  1. Choose the final position. Leave working room at the cargo doors and access for future maintenance.
  2. Confirm the footprint. Mark the corners and verify setbacks, easements and local requirements.
  3. Measure the entire approach. Record gate width, lane width, turns and the distance available for the truck.
  4. Look overhead. Wires, branches, signs, canopies and building projections can stop a delivery.
  5. Evaluate the surface. Soft soil, fresh fill, mud, steep cross-slope or weak pavement may not support the loaded truck.
  6. Plan drainage and support. A level, well-drained base helps doors operate and reduces settlement.
  7. Choose door direction. A tilt-bed delivery generally unloads one end first, so the loading orientation affects where the doors finish.
  8. Move obstacles. Vehicles, dumpsters, materials and temporary fencing should be cleared before the truck arrives.
  9. Identify the site contact. One person should understand the approved placement and be available to guide the driver.

Build a stable, drainable base

Containers perform best when the four lower corners are supported on a level plane. Compacted gravel is common because it drains and can be corrected as it settles. Concrete piers or pads may be appropriate for permanent projects, subject to local requirements. Avoid setting the entire underside directly into wet soil. Water and uneven settlement can make doors difficult to operate.

Why placement direction matters

Ask how the container will leave the trailer. With tilt-bed equipment, the first end off the trailer normally stays near the starting point while the truck moves forward. The requested cargo-door direction can determine whether the truck must back in or pull through. Share photos or a simple sketch when the site is not obvious.

Representative contractor scenario

A contractor may prepare a neat gravel pad beside a building yet leave only a short driveway in front of it. The container fits, but the truck cannot straighten the trailer or pull away during unloading. Moving the pad twenty feet or choosing a different delivery method may solve the problem. That conversation is much cheaper before dispatch.

Delivery-day responsibilities

Keep people away from the truck’s operating area. The driver controls the equipment and may refuse an unsafe placement. Do not ask the driver to cross unverified septic systems, buried utilities or soft shoulders. If weather changes the ground condition, contact the supplier instead of hoping the truck can force the delivery.

Frequently asked questions

How level must the site be?

The container should be supported level enough for the frame and doors to operate without binding. The delivery provider can explain practical tolerances for the site.

Can a container be placed under power lines?

Overhead utilities are a serious hazard. The supplier and utility guidance must be followed; do not assume visible clearance is adequate.

Can the driver reposition the container after unloading?

That depends on equipment and site. Confirm placement limits before delivery rather than relying on last-minute adjustment.
